The Hushbox© Presents:
A Special Black History Month Hushbox Lounge©

On Sunday, February 10, 2002,the Hushbox© presented a special Black History Month Hushbox Lounge©, at Commune, celebrating Black History Month and the new works, As Advertised, by Atlanta based, emerging artist Cedric Smith.

As part of the occasion, Commune offered a prixe fix menu for Hushbox© subscribers and their guest who wanted to dine on this special date. As you can see from the pictures below, a good time was had by all. I want to say big ups to all that came out and continue to support our efforts.

If you have never experienced Commune, I highly suggest that you do. What is Commune you may ask?

As broken down by Andrew Berg for DETAILS magazine.... "a hip casual atmosphere" replete with "a highly polished, warm and sensual interior" perfect for party meetings. There is space for 190 in the "Hollywood/Pullman booths" or courtyard cafe. But the main dining room is designed around a 24-seat communal table with a luminescent onyx top. The 28-foot wrap-around bar is done up in red (da!) leather. The walls? African wenge wood. The food? No borscht and cabbage at this Commune. Feast on salmon, crab cake and multitudinous fromages. Needless to say, you capitalist flunkies, Commune is the new culinary Kremlin of the People's Republic of Atlanta.

As always the set was wonderful. I appreciate you coming in and speaking and remembering who I was. I know you see a lot of faces. Thanks again for the exposure.

As for the company, marvelous is a word that comes to mind. Our companions were a humor-filled dentist and his lovely attorney wife. Our comical but frank discussions read like an op/ed section in the Sunday Times - entertaining and cerebral. After my fourth glass of sparkling wine, laughter was inevitable. Cedric Smith, the artist, kept everyone entertained with his sincere and self-depreciating "open mic-less" brand of table humor. After cries of "speech," he stood up and asked for everyone's occupation and reportable tax income. It is always good to see a young artist brimming with joy and self-confidence from the success of an opening of their work. Splendid.

Dinner was good. The salad was fresh, although the goat cheese could have been applied more liberally. The duck entree, though a little overdone, was truly wonderful. Believe it or not, I ordered and finished a dish of banana bread pudding - it was marvelous. Please understand this is huge to a boy who grew up in the deep south and was inundated with various bread pudding concoctions. This dish always came at the tail end of the groceries, usually on Sunday, and signalled Mom had run out of ideas for that week. Commune took, for me, a haggard desert workhorse and gave it a new face. My dinner date said she had had an inspiring evening and was truly grateful to Keith. As always with the man known as Kebo, I met new company and enjoyed a new spot. Thanks for the good times. sincerely...

The set on sunday at commune was real chill. thanks for the invite and putting everything together - it was definitely a nice flow. my girl and i were on the lower level and we had a few appetizers and some red wine. i didn't get an opportunity to introduce myself and connect with you, but i definitely plan to do so at the next set.

The hushbox lounge at Commune featured yummy food and drink in an top notch environment. But what I truly love about the hbl is the wealth of inspired people that come together. I always meet someone that I want to add to my little red book . . . with stars.

It's sad when folks think that they are to cool to RSVP. I'm not sure if they really think it's unnecessary. I cannot help but wonder what types actually feel that their status at other pretentious ass functions (i.e.-big restaurant openings, anniversary parties, etc.), somehow makes them so special, that they feel that they can just show up at your stuff as well as others. What's even more laughable is when they have the nerve to get upset when they find themselves not on the list for a function.

Anyway, I feel your frustrations and applaud you for sticking to your guns, despite what possible criticism you will face simply for trying to make folks accountable for their actions. I hope that you continue creating events that obviously appeals to a more grounded, diverse group of guest. There are those of us that attend those other above mentioned parties and like what you're doing.

Keep raising the bar as you did with the Commune event.
