I found myself listening to Cassandra Wilson at Stefan's today, and (as always) remembering dinner at the restaurant on River St. in Savannah... sitting next to her, cracking jokes about how much the tech guy sitting across from us at the table looked like the guy on the cover of MAD Magazine! All this, over a truly excellent meal and a chance to converse with her, at length, about the humble beginnings of her career, her technique, AND having her educate me on why rolling wine around in its glass and having it be "leggy" was an indicator of its quality. I will, no doubt, treasure that moment for the rest of my life. I just don't know that I ever truly expressed how thankful I am that you afforded me that experience. I even laugh now about the ride down in the van that seemed to have a mind of its own as it shifted its own gears!!! Look how far we've come man.... suffice to say that I was never looking for the friend that you have indeed become. I pray God continues to bless you to do the things that you do and to always keep you humble enough to share that gift with others as you have shared with me. Much Love... and Thanks Again.

I checked it out thoroughly, since I had nothing but time. I read every article, every kudos, checked out every picture, and I was very impressed. YOU ARE THE SHIT MAN!! T o someone who (unknowingly!) kept my faith alive in the cultural environment that is Atlanta. So many who promise big and never deliver... these artists, producers, and promoters find themselves on my "Avoid" list and then dismissed from my consciousness altogether.  The ONE person who truly lives up to his own reputation and then exceeds himself at every opportunity, the ONE person I never hear any negative recollections of, the ONE person who practices what he promotes and promotes what he practices... is you. As a frustrated artist in Atlanta, I thank you KEBO for living up to your own title. I'm proud Atlanta has such a classy ambassador and I wish for all the health, wealth, and success you deserve in the new year.

12.12.02

Christopher Russ breaks it down:

I am sending this email to just say thanks for having quality events and a professional/honest promotional organization.

What brought this on is an event that I attended last night, Urbanbarz at Level 3. I really appreciate that you did not advertise that event on Hushbox because it was quite atrocious. Here is a quote from their website about the event, ".............all together with No Lines, No Cover, and best of all Free Cocktails & Free Food!!Ó Mind you, every event that I attend isnÕt free, nor am I too cheap to pay for anything, but this is what they were advertising. The event started at 9 and when I showed up a little before 10pm, there was a line about a block long, and I had to wait for 30 minutes in the cold, all so that I could enter a nearly empty club. Also they advertised that there would be free drinks until they run out of liquor. It's amazing how the entire club ran out of liquor at 10:30 and it turned into a cash bar, or the fact that they were handing out drink tickets which only allowed people to have one free drink, or that a club with about five bars only had two available when they were serving free drinks and they were open with the minimum bartenders at each. Plus, when I left I overheard people stating that Level 3 started charging to get into the club.

I feel that this event and the organization is a monstrosity. I don't agree with their false advertisement and their misleading propaganda. If the event were going to be a cash bar and have charge a cover charge at a certain time it would have been great to know in advance. I feel as if I was taken advantage of just to boost their daily revenue.

This is where you come in. All the events that you have sponsored have been of the utmost in quality. You let us know up front what the event will entail, instead of misleading us just to make a quick buck. Thanks. I will continue to support Hushbox and tell all my friends about the website and what a great job you are doing. If you need any help with anything just remember this email and I will try my best to do what I can.

**Sorry for the email being so long, I just needed to vent!

What makes something as simple as you showing up Saturday even more applaudable is that I know you are a busy man. I'm saying all this to say that I appreciate you encouraging, supporting, promoting but most of all coming to the event Saturday. You set a standard that many cannot even see, let alone achieve. Over the last month or so, you may have noticed that I have been experimenting with a few different formats as it pertains to sending out emails, one reason being that I'm trying to assure the highest level of delivery with all emails that I send out, especially those for clients who contract us for promotional reasons. Today, I'm simply am taking a self check and saying some things out loud that I have thought about in private this week.

What are your thoughts, criticism, at least be constructive, with how the Hushbox is doing?

I'm not sure about you, but since I started this lil vibe a few years back, I certainly have seen growth, not just in terms of the numbers and the quality of folks that receive the Hushbox (14,000 + subscribers), but in the quality of the info, whether you agree with the opinions expressed by me and the writers or Not, we're still free to say it and you're free to be critical. I dish it out and certainly would like your opinions.

So, let me be clear on something, I am not above being criticized for being honest enough to put information out there that you may deem questionable. I simply ask you to take time out and send an email or pick up the phone and lets discuss. Smiling in ones face and making questionable comments behind their backs after all says more about you than the person targeted by the criticism, at least I'm being honest, can you?

On another note, the Hushbox is a opt in option, not a dictatorship. If for some reason you know me or have a personal tie to me, yet, you desire not to receive the Hushbox any longer and feel I may black ball you, PAA leazzze, Unsubscribe, for we all have bigger fish to fry and I could use some catfish right now. I only want folks who APPRECIATE the efforts, and spend less time questioning them, to be on the receiving end of this. That's my word.

Back to the maturity and growth thing. Those of you who have been around certainly should be able to see the growth of this thing as well as me, for you know that this email would have taken a totally different tone 2 years ago. My my my, change is good, and you should be braced for more. All responses received in response are printed below.>>>

My first impulse was, "were is this coming from, do I have to help Keith pounce on someone who wishes him ill will". Because you have done sooo much. I am sure it is HARD work to do it. I gave another read... cooler heads do prevail. From reading it again I find that this is yet another impasse for you. You are officially at another high level of success. With that comes a brand new level of hate. If you are like me it is hard to relate to hate and the haters. You are doing a great thing. No one else can do it, or even wants to come near putting forth the effort it takes. What they can do is attempt to bring you down. This cannot happen. Continue to do the wonderful things you do. It is hard work to give a piece of yourself and folks not appreciate it. I for one appreciate the work you do and value our friendship. The only advice I have is , expect to be disappointed at times. You are a public figure now. That is part of being one. If you feel compelled, call people on their actions. You don't have to call them out just call. You get a lot of love, so what's a little hate? absolutely nothing.

Anthony Phillips wrote:(06.21.02) My feedback...congrats on having the resolve to grow something major out of nothing, the Hushbox and everything you put into it will pay off big time. This is how a number of major successful mags and promotions agencies started. Vibe for one. The site is hard to read for me. The type just needs to be bigger. Maybe it's my comp setting, but I can read other sites well. I check the site every now and then, but it's the select emails that I really pay attention to. We all like to pretend we are not influenced by your selective judgement, but that's the real reason we all check for HB Ð KIR Though we may deny it, we love your ridiculously high standards. That makes you an arrogant asshole and also makes the Hushbox dependable. The price you pay I guess. However, you could stop hating on everyone for lack of style. I must admit, sometimes you take it further than is necessary and the critiques start to sound like insults. It's a fine line. Overall I take my hat off to you. HB is by far one of if not the best cutting edge info in ATL.

I cannot help but wonder what types actually feel that their status at other pretentious ass functions (i.e.-big restaurant openings, anniversary parties, etc.), somehow makes them so special, that they feel that they can just show up at your stuff as well as others. What's even more laughable is when they have the nerve to get upset when they find themselves not on the list for a function.

Anyway, I feel your frustrations and applaud you for sticking to your guns, despite what possible criticism you will face simply for trying to make folks accountable for their actions. I hope that you continue creating events that obviously appeals to a more grounded, diverse group of guest. There are those of us that attend those other above mentioned parties and like what you're doing.

It's good to see you getting your old spirit back. Heartbreak hits everybody; even the cool people. When you open yourself up to love somebody, we run the risk of being hurt. Especially men because we spend so much time supressing that stuff. When it happens all you can do is hold on to the good memories. To quote a line from Swingers: "The best thing to do is get back out there, you can't sit home thinking about it." Stay up. T.

This is my viewpoint on relationships in 2002...

Since my boyfriend of 3 and 1/2 years broke up...

I ask myself what the fuck happened to the world and this dating scene?

I feel like I am Rip Van Winkle that fell hell asleep and just woke up to some shit I don't even recognize! Women aren't women anymore...It seems as the majority of all females are interested in what he can do rather than who is he...and men are gettin so accustomed to that theory that they would rather pay for the pussy with no strings attached than to take time out to get to know the girl...and one cannot live without the other...so where does that leave women that still have faith in healthy loving romantic relationships?

Do we jump on the band wagon and start fuckin 4 money? NO!!!

Do we have menage trois to please the man so we are guaranteed some cash? No!!!

Do we settle and be his mistress? I Think Not! ....

Do we settle for less than our expectations of what our man should be like? NO...

What is there left to do...cuz we ain't gettin any younger...and women lets face it.. we need big DILDOS...

No sheet! nebo was trying like an 8 leg-ged dawg (that's a strong, fast, determined dawg, BTW) to get out of Atlanta for his new ventures in DC... after several weeks of preparation, on the day I was trying to leave, my white ass got thrown in jail for 13 hours with an array of Atlanta's finest daily lock-up junkees who all had a good, "aiiiin't thhhat a bitccchhh!" every time they called for, "Mr. White?"

Well, 13 hours and $1100 later I was free to go home at 1 am. Nevermind the 5 days of BULLSHIZNIT and $300 it took to get the Ne-mo-bile out of impound... Then, after all that I had to come back down to Atlanta to appear before a judge who was told the following by a beautiful Nubian representative, "Your Honor, it appears Mr... Ummm, White, was never properly served... In fact it appears Mr. Um, White, never actually had a lapse of insurance, he merely switched from Geico to Progressive, Geico called him in as a non-renewal and Progressive never alerted the state of his new policy..."

Says the man in the robe... "Dismissed."

Umm, I don't think I am gonna wait around for a refund of bail bond fees, time spent in the clink, $77 in collect calls from the 'dial 70 times to get a line' collect call only payphones, $300 impound fees, one week of taxi rides and marta fares, two days at the Georgia Driver's license reinstatement "office" ((more fee$)) and compensation for a lost job in DC cuz my ass was delayed 9 days at a time when jobs are damn near impossible to find!!!

What does all this mean?!?!? It means that if Nebo does not make some progress in the DC area soon, his white-ass is gonna be heading back to the place where he still has most of his business.... Hot-lanta...

And if I have to come back there... this time... I ain't palyin' playa'!!! so the freakin' atlantan dznrs betta lewk da fahk owt, cuz I b creepin aw dey bidness!!! Alright so I got a little fired up... Peace in the middle east. ~NSW

Kebo,

Happy 2002 to you, hope things look up for you, sounds like so far things have been a little rough.

About the insurance thing - what I read in the AJC on Monday is that there is supposed to be a new on line system where the cops can check your insurance status instantly by the car tags but of course the system is not up and running yet, so there is a gap in the law where cards are no longer required to be carried but the state has no way to verify coverage.

I might be dim, but I don't see the point of carrying my declarations page since it is comes with my card and could be just as cancelled and/or just as fake. The paper did not say anything at all about carrying a declarations page and recommended that drivers continue to carry their cards just in case and indicated that the police should use common sense until the new system is up and running. Bet the tech heads that are supposed to be working on the system are waiting in line to renew their drivers licenses....that topic made today's paper and the governor has it on his fix list.

As a too frequent visitor to traffic court over the years, what I have seen is that if you do have insurance but have no proof with you in the car, the judge will not fine you if you can produce evidence of coverage at the time you were stopped.

Proof of insurance stops are a regular occurence at 5th and Argonne in Midtown so I always keep my card over the visor and manage not to tell the cops that there are about ten million better ways they can spend their time in Midtown. Word to the wise that muggings at gunpoint are occurring with scary frequency around the club scene of Backstreet, Kaya, Velvet Room etc. This is not hearsay, we have had four violent incidents in the past month within one block of my place including blood on the sidewalk outside my building after two men were mugged and one was shot but not killed the Saturday night before New Year's on 6th street between Piedmont and Juniper. Car break ins have always been epidemic in this part of town and sometimes the cops add a parking ticket on top of that to make a Saturday night on the town extra expensive, but going after people with guns used to be a rare event.

Anyway, I checked the Oxendine web site and did not find any info about proof of insurance at all, the latest update concerned the State Farm case, so not sure who has the latest and greatest information, but thanks for the civic heads up and here's wishing a safe and healthy 2002 for all the hushbox hunks and hunnies!

Anywho, back to you - Congrats on the ELLE spotting. As well as everything else going on... It seems like only yesterday we were sitting on sweet mocha leather tiles, sipping on some wine with Lisa and Lisa (not to be confused with LisaLisa and the cult jam, nor Lisa and Wendy of the Prince Jam; though more closely related to the latter two love kittens) exchanging visionary views and listening to the hype of the forthcoming, notyetrealeased HUSH-ness ... "I'm gonna build a online joint from the ground up, spreading the vibe and connecting the peeps ... The kicker is that one day it's gonna be so big, some moFo is gonna HAVTO HAVIT, and he gonna HAVTO gimme a $#!*Load of $$$ for it!" or something slightly more visionary than that...

Nonetheless, here it is, just over a year later, gaining local fame and intercontinental buzz.

CONGRATULATIONS ON A VISION IN PROGRESS!!!

Oooh, I might get in trouble for telling everybody about this, but I never could keep a secret. Hushbox is a shi-shi, hush-hush affair for the extraordinary folk that follow the career of Atlanta-based designer Keith Brown. It's his way of saying "thanks" and he throws a wonderful shindig for all of his fans and clients and avid supporters.

The last Hushbox was held at the newly expanded VisionarieSpa, a gorgeous example of how feng shui and style are hopelessly intertwined, (pause to rave about VisionarieSpa: when I die and go to heaven I will live everyday of my life in a spa, until then I'll be a regular at VisionarieSpa. It is stocked to it's gorgeous rooftop with the latest in every form of service like hair smoothies, moor mud wrap with vichy shower, reiki, and wellness classes including qui gong, smoking cessation, and life enhancement coaching and counseling. Just call them 404.733.6400. they're great and yes, black-owned. Ya'll go'head!)

Back to Hushbox...This was (ashamedly) my first, but I went with friends well-versed in fabulousness. Kebo himself donned a blood red ruffle tux shirt, something you can only pull off if you have the proper 'tude. The food was provided by Cherry (another new midtown hot spot) and the cognac tasting was compliments of Martell. Live African drums provided soundtrack by the zen fountain, and a DJ provided grooves throughout. The atmosphere was great, whether having a martini under the huge oak tree in the front garden, or lounging in the waiting room, and all of the beautiful people represented. Ya'll looked good, ya heard me?

There is but one-way to be invited to a Hushbox affair (or Kebo's birthday bash) and that is to check out the website. You'll want to do that anyway just to subscribe to the newsletter that's all what is hot and happening, with amusing stories with Kebo's opinion on whatever-wildchild

Hey Mr. Keith!

You sound like a busy man sir... I'm always amazed at how you continue to make US (your subscribers) a part of what it is you are doing. Even if some folks don't pick up on it, or take you up on it, you always seem to make us part owner. I love hearing about the stuff you're up to, the strides you're making, and the positivity you seem to maintain. Your box really has been a wonderful thaang! You put stuff out there... get the conversations started... say what you mean and most times mean what you say... and allow US to do the same.

And besides that it's ALWAYS a breath of fresh air to hear folks talk about the stuff that gets 'em down... yet SEE that they're not allowing it to KEEP 'em down. And YOU sir... definitely ain't being kept down!

With all that said... you know I have to get the fussing out of the way too... it's the woman in me! lol Don't be so busy that you're not taking care of yourself, breathing, relaxing, and just BEING. Okay? You're too dayum sexy to not maintain that sexiness! Take care sir!

Wow - this past week certainly has been a tough one - and one that's changed every life on this earth. I though you handled the situation well - and was grateful to read your article.

Things here are still very, very weird. 40 of my 52 students are young men of draft age. Needless to say, they're even more tense than the rest of us are. Meanwhile, they've FINALLY started really checking out vehicles entering the US. (You can still get into Canada with little more than a story and a driver's license - and that just pisses me off!) IN order for me to get to school in time for my 10:00 class, I have to leave the house by 6:30 lest I get stuck in a 3 hour backup. I'm grateful they're taking this so seriously. I just wish they'd set up "commuter lanes" and "holiday traveller lanes". (Lots of seniors are in the process of heading south for the winter and, damn!, they block things up.)

Anyway, I do hope you're doing well this week. Keep on sending the "Keith's view" of things. It helps.

Hi Kebo! This is my first time writing. I joined your e-mail list because I intensely miss reading your weekly column in the CL. Recently, I read that the editor is leaving too. So sad that a cool newspaper has to get so corporate but that's what you get when you put a replubican in office (sorry, no offense just personal opinion).

I went to the Art Party Saturday night and loved it! The food was unbelievable and plentiful and the wine did not stop flowing. It's my first time attending and it was worth every cent of the $35 cover price.

Amber provided the entertainment and she rocked! My friends asked me if I wanted to go and didn't exactly tell me all the details so I gave her my money and off we went. The concert and ambience was incredible!

kebo replied:

Hey Carrie... I'm not sure what happened with you not getting the box... it certainly was not intentional.

As far as love Jones, nothing wrong with it...it was cute for what it was... My analogy of it was as it applies to the poetry and the pretentious movement that it spawned within the Afro- American communities...all of a sudden it became cool to go to a coffee shop or a poetry gathering and sip on coffee simple because one saw it in the movie and thought it was tresÕ cool...thus paying no attention to the work that poets were putting out...Some of the poets, way too many actually, got caught up in the "Love Jones" style, and I choose my words carefully...

To each his own but just keep it real.

Nico wrote in regards to kebo feeling a lil blue.

Awwww....I feel you, dear.

Thought I would send you this phenomenal quote from the great Mandela. Someone passed it to me the other day, and it's still ringing LOUDLY in my head...

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. You were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Keep your head up!

Nico

Love that Hushbox - I love that you are so tapped into the global scene and willing to share your ideas and promote.

By so many standards, yesterday is actually today, and people are satisfied with that disrealization. Being intellectually aware and emotionally sensitive to what is happening around, as you are, and how it fits into future, past and present context is a gift.

Your's is the kind of vision that leads and from a selfish standpoint (selfishness in a healthy light here) helps me stay fresh.

There are group of folks out here, quiet as it is kept who are not hip.

Ok, there I said. That's right we receive the hushbox and we subscribed to the hushbox, we look forward to each issue, but guess what we are not hip. Yes, we are the "tragically unhip".

We don't wear terribly hip clothes, and certainly couldn't tell you what hit the Roots are famous for. However, we totally appreciate and respect the tragically hip. All lot of the "tragically unhip" will not speak up. Why? Because we want to be hip. We sometimes suffer in silence not knowing the meanings of the cool abbreviations you so often use. Well, I am fed up with keeping my secret. For those you "tragically unhip" and you know who you are, here a few tips to stave off those little embarrassing moments in front of the "tragically hip":

**Stay in touch a "tragically hip" friend and ask the occasional unhip question.

**If you get lucky enough and you're about to go backstage at a concert just keep quiet and let the "tragically hip" lead the way. You could learn something.

**Form a support group of other "tragically unhip" buddies. There's safety in numbers.

**Finally, attend the "tragically hip" events and of course be the envy of all your "tragically unhip" friends.
